Genesis 3:8 “And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day…”
From the very beginning, the earth was never meant to be just another planet spinning in space. It was designed as a dwelling place, a sanctuary where Heaven and Earth met, where the invisible God could commune openly with His creation. The Garden of Eden was not merely a garden; it was a temple of divine fellowship.
Earth: God’s Sanctuary, Not Just Soil
When God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1), He was not simply forming a physical world. He was preparing a habitation, a sacred space where His presence could dwell among His image-bearers. Each act of creation was intentional: the light, the firmament, the land, the sea, all arranged like the outer courts, inner courts, and Holy of Holies of a grand temple.
By the seventh day, when God rested, He was not tired — He was enthroned. Just as the glory cloud filled the Tabernacle in Exodus 40:34–35, so the Creator filled His earthly sanctuary with His glory and declared it “very good.” “Heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool…” — Isaiah 66:1
The earth was His temple — the garden, His Holy Place — and man, His royal priest.
Man: The Priest of the Planet
Adam was not just the first man; he was the first high priest. Placed in Eden to “tend and keep it” (Genesis 2:15), Adam’s role mirrored that of the Levitical priests who were commanded to “serve and guard” the tabernacle (Numbers 3:7–8).
He was to cultivate creation, maintain purity, and preserve the sacred space of God’s presence. Eden was holy ground — a meeting point of the spiritual and natural realms. Through Adam, creation was meant to reflect Heaven’s order. As long as he remained in communion with God, the earth would remain in harmony.
But sin shattered the sanctuary.
The Curse: The Sanctuary Broken
When Adam rebelled, the earth itself felt the wound of separation. The soil was cursed (Genesis 3:17–18) because the priest of creation had fallen. The sanctuary became polluted. The very ground that once received Heaven’s footsteps now groaned under the weight of corruption.
Romans 8: 22 To this day we are aware of the universal agony and groaning of creation, as if it were in the contractions of labor for childbirth.
Creation was exiled from the presence of God just as man was. The glory lifted, the garden closed, and the cherubim with flaming swords guarded the way back to the Tree of Life (Genesis 3:24).
But God’s heart never changed — He still desired to dwell among His people.
The Pattern Repeated: Tabernacle, Temple, and Glory
Throughout history, God kept building sanctuaries. Holy sanctuaries that echoes a longing for a lost state of perfection, beauty, and divine connection of Eden.
In Exodus 25:8, He said, “Let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.”
The Tabernacle became a mobile Eden, a place of presence. The Temple of Solomon became a permanent throne on earth, filled with the Shekinah Glory (2 Chronicles 5:13–14).
Every sanctuary pointed to God’s ultimate desire: to walk again among His people. Even when the glory departed in Ezekiel’s vision (Ezekiel 10:18), God promised a new day a renewed sanctuary not made with hands.
Jesus: The Sanctuary Restored.
When Christ came, the Word became flesh and dwelt (tabernacled) among us (John 1:14). In Him, God once again walked in His garden. Jesus carried the presence that once filled Eden, the same glory that hovered over the mercy seat. At the Cross, He bore the curse that had defiled the earth His blood touching the dust to redeem it. Through His resurrection, the sanctuary was reopened. Through His Spirit, Heaven invaded Earth once more. Now, every believer becomes a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19).
The presence that once filled Eden now fills us.
The Earth Redeemed: A Sanctuary Restored
The story doesn’t end with salvation; it culminates in restoration. Revelation 21–22 reveals a new Heaven and a new Earth where the tabernacle of God is with men. The curse will be no more. The river of life will flow again, and the Tree of Life will yield its fruit in every season.
God’s purpose will come full circle:
Habakkuk 2:14 “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”
The planet will once again become His sanctuary, not just a world of matter and time, but a holy dwelling of divine presence.
Living as Sanctuary Carriers:
We are called to steward the earth as Adam once did but now with the authority of the risen Christ. Everywhere you go, you carry Eden inside you. Your life becomes a mobile sanctuary, a place where Heaven touches Earth again.
Let your words, prayers, and actions release the fragrance of His presence into the atmosphere. When the glory of God flows through His sons and daughters, creation itself begins to heal.
Conclusion: The Earth Still Longs for His Glory
The earth was never meant to be just a rock in orbit it was meant to be a realm of divine habitation. It was, and is, the sanctuary of God’s presence. And through Christ in you the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27) Heaven and Earth are once again becoming one.
