In the heart of every believer, there is a promise — not just of peace or forgiveness, but of powerful, flowing life. Jesus spoke these words in John 7:38:
Believe in me so that rivers of living water will burst out from within you, flowing from your innermost being, just like the Scripture says!”
This river isn’t ordinary water. It flows from a deeper place — the throne of God within the human heart — a throne Christ takes when we invite Him to reign in our lives. Let’s explore the significance of this imagery and how it transforms us from the inside out.
- What Are the Rivers of Living Water? The term “living water” appears multiple times in Scripture. In ancient times, “living water” referred to flowing, fresh water — a symbol of life, cleansing, and continual renewal. Jesus used this physical image to describe a spiritual reality.
In John 7, we’re told this living water refers to the Holy Spirit:

Ezekiel 47 gives a vision of a river flowing from the temple, bringing life wherever it goes — even turning salt water fresh. That’s what the Spirit does through you: He makes the impossible possible.
